The Unliving on Steam

we're looking at the unliving a new roguelite arpg due to release October 31st I'd fired this demo up actually not knowing what to expect the trailers that I'd seen were pretty low key on what the actual point of this game was and I kept reading about an RPG style of game but after watching trailer after trailer I thought hang on here this kind of looks more like some vampire Survivor style of game with hordes and hordes of enemies so after some thorough game time and plenty I mean plenty of deaths was I right [Music] well yes and no I think I'm right in saying that this is no RPG in its true form or even arpg it's far from Diablo or Path of Exile Etc in fact progression with weapons and perks via loot comes at your fairly slow paced at least this was the case in the demo anyway it could be different in the full version where I was wrong well kind of wrong was comparing this to vampire survivors because there are hordes in this game but instead of enemies coming at you wave after wave you have your own horde an army of Undead so let's talk about the game Loop here considering that this game features roguelike mechanics your first run through sees your dude pretty green and low spec your major defense and offense comes from necromancy and raising the dead enemies you slay very very cool mind you find some more enemies create a bigger Army find loot and gain perks abilities and skills get as far as you can and when you die you are rewarded by how many total living you turned into unliving these skill points are used at home base to unlock new perks Etc that's about the gist of it a few cool things to talk about in further detail that deserves some Spotlight would be for one I'd loved the Simplicity of the game and mechanics you have a pretty good feel for the general game Loop and the system after one or two deaths I can't go past a nice looking pixel art game either and this is definitely one to appreciate and for some reason things don't get messy or cluttered when you have this huge Undead Army attacking groups of enemies I can still seem to see my various minions which is very handy in battles so what's it like and how do you play okay so apart from that dress down game loop I described let's look at the actual gameplay you have simple mouse and keys operation here with movement aswd Keys space bar to dash your left Mouse for basic attack and the right click controls your minions to where you want to go or attack and our key is your magic button to raise the dead your necromancy skill simple right I couldn't help but feel the Age of Empire's Vibes when I was battling and better yet I didn't have to worry about building while doing the fighting we have some cool stuff down the bottom with the special abilities that you find during your run and these have their own different costs to use up here on the top is your HP and life force and way over here on your right think of this as sort of your static abilities again all nice neat and tidy and straightforward for these types of games what made it more unique for me and that extra oh that's cool moment was the ability to sacrifice your minions throughout battle moments so so cool like you have these different styles of minions such as henchmen or close combat ones ranged ones and big beefy dudes and you right click on them and they have a special sacrifice ability unique to them and even more awesome is that you can upgrade these sacrifice abilities by the choice of runes you pick up along the way I especially thought it was so clever that you have like this medic sorcerer type minion you sacrifice him and guess what you and your surrounding minions get a health buff this is where I found the game to be more interesting throughout the playthrough I was craving to find more different enemies to kill to in turn have as a minion and see what kind of sacrifice Shenanigans it could unleash try to beat down a werewolf and see how that sacrifice ability goes for you all right so down to my opinion for the unliving well it's a tricky one for me as I do like the roguelike games well maybe that's an understatement I thoroughly enjoy them but after my time here I just think there is better out there more worthy of your hours you need to invest in these types of games I would have loved to play this game on a controller and can't really see why that wouldn't be possible my movement felt slow and clunky but who knows there could be some perks where you become more agile as is the case in most roguelites I know for a fact that the demo held back on spells runes and powers that are available in the full game my main love affair with Rogue lights is its addictiveness am I thinking about the game even when not playing do you have to pry the controller out of my hands to stop me playing round after round am I about to piss my pants because I've been holding it in for six hours now stuff like that everybody my hp's their pants it's the coolest am I getting any of those feelings after playing the unliving nah even with some of its cool moments it's just not enough to be very different and make me want to play over and over remember again this is only a demo version so he's hoping the team at Rocket Bush Studio have been listening to the community and can knock it out of the park on release date if you are interested in this game please don't forget to add it to your wish list in Steam it really helps out developers I have like a billion on my wish list.
